Expanding LONGER Utterances for Around Town

Description: This activity was designed to encourage students to expand their mean length of utterance with visual supports and motivating puzzle pieces. Pictures are simple and depict people engaging in various actions around the theme of getting around town. This activity advances one step beyond previous Expanding Utterances tasks from 3 units (noun + action + object) to 4 units which include a prepositional phrase. Some 3 unit utterances remain with the object removed but the prepositional phrase added (e.g., She is running to the house). The first puzzle piece for the subject (person or pronoun) is already complete to save time. The repetitive nature and predictability of this task are ideal for students with autism or students with limited verbal skills. Adults can elicit the responses with each puzzle piece by asking what doing, what and where questions.
