Description: This deck includes 18 cards that involve solving a system of equations using the substitution method. As this is a difficult concept for most Algebra 1 students, the cards are designed in a way to help students understand the process. A brief outline of the concepts included on each of the cards as well as the tasks involved is included below: • Cards 1 – 5 require the students to determine what the first step should be when solving a system of equations, given a system (multiple-choice) • Cards 6 – 8 require the students to substitute an expression from one equation for a variable in the second equation (drag-n-drop) • Cards 8 – 10 require the students to substitute an expression from one equation for a variable in the second equation (drag-n-drop) AND solve for the variable (fill-in-the-blank) • Cards 11 – 13 require the students to solve a system of equations using the substitution method; these cards walk through steps and include color-coding to help students understand what to do. At least one equation in each system already has one variable in terms of the other. (fill-in-the-blank) • Cards 14 – 18 require the students to solve a system of equations using the substitution method. Students will need to solve for one variable in at least one of these equations in order to solve. (fill-in-the-blank)
