Description: Charades is a word game that is played without speaking. Students take turns acting out a picture (animal, action, sport, person, place, emotion, etc) and the other group members try to guess which one it is. Traditionally, only hand gestures and movements are allowed but in my experience, younger students might need to use sound effects. The game can be played in person or during remote sessions with kids of any age. Players can work alone or in teams. I have included a variety of categories so the game can be played again and again year round (includes seasonal vocabulary Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall). During my speech and language groups, I often tie this activity in with a discussion about nonverbal communication (facial expressions, body language, gestures). Social skills groups practice taking turns, asking questions, and communicating nonverbally. My youngest students practice expanding their language skills ("She is brushing her teeth", "He is playing football", "I am a bunny", etc).
