Grades: 3,4,5,6,7

Description: This deck includes a lesson and practice cards for standard 5.NBT.2. Students will learn TWO ways to multiply and divide by powers of ten. They will then be able to practice either/ both strategies on the next 27 cards. LESSON: -A card is included to teach students to use place value understanding and patterns in place value when multiplying and dividing by powers of 10. -A card is included to teach students to use place value understanding and patterns in the placement of the decimal point when multiplying and dividing by powers of 10. *Either/ both lesson cards can be "hidden" if preferred. PRACTICE: -Students will see a multiplication or division sentence for a whole number or decimal and a power of 10 (10 and exponents 2, 3, 4). -Students will type their answer in a text box. DEEPER UNDERSTANDING PROBLEMS INCLUDED: -Students will need to add additional zeros. For example, for 37.6 รท 10^3, students will need to understand that they have to add the (unidentified) zero from the hundreds place to correctly answer .0376. -Students will work with whole numbers. For example, students will see 45 x 10^2. Students will need to know where the (unidentified) decimal is. -Students will identify 10 as 10^1. 5.NBT.2 Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole number exponents to denote powers of 10.
