This deck is designed to help students improve their vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. Each card features a sentence from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis. with a word in bold. Students are then presented with a multiple-choice question that asks them to identify a synonym for the bolded word based on the context of the sentence. This deck is aligned with the following Common Core State Standards for 4th-6th graders: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including those that allude to significant characters found in mythology (e.g., Herculean). CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language such as metaphors and similes. LITERACY.RL.6.4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone.
