Description
Students will practice converting mixed numbers to improper fractions in this scaffolded, building block themed activity. Students will see a mixed number written in traditional fraction notation. 1. On the first ten cards, students will show all of the steps for converting mixed numbers to improper fractions. -They will fill in each blank of the formula as they go through the process (multiplying the denominator by the whole number, and then adding the numerator). -Lastly, they will fill in the improper fraction. -If a student makes an error at any step, they will receive immediate feedback that the number entered in that box is incorrect. 2. On the remaining cards, students will only see the mixed number and a blank fraction template. -Students will complete the conversion formula on their own and then fill in the improper fraction. -Definitions of proper, improper and mixed fractions included on card 2 -Conversion process explained on card 3 -Scaffolding also provided by color-coding. 4.NF.3 Understand a fraction a/b with a > 1 as a sum of fractions 1/b. 5.NF.3 Interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator (a/b = a ÷ b).
