Description: This deck of BOOM Learning cards focused on NGSS standards MS-PS1-5 by reinforcing the Law of Conservation of Matter or the Law of Conservation of Mass in that the total number of atoms does not change in a chemical reaction and thus mass is conserved. The deck provides a series of Chemical Equations asking students if any mass/matter was lost or gained during the displayed reactions. It provides students with the 'anatomy' of a chemical reaction (reactants and products) and then gives great examples of balanced vs. not balanced equations where students can count physical representation of the molecules as well as see a chart of how many elements are in the product vs. the reactant. As the deck progresses, the students are introduced to reading equations (coefficient, symbol, subscript) and then are encouraged to try more balanced vs. not balanced cards without the physical representations of the molecules. A variety of modalities are used in this deck including T/F, Multiple Choice, Drag and Drop or Click the correct answer. It was created with the NGSS assessment boundary in mind considering students should NOT be balancing equations but rather recognizing that IN a reaction, no matter is lost or gained.
