Description: Semantically Speaking - Word Connections targets categorical flexibility in forming word associations and building strong semantic relationships. The activities help to increase an awareness and perception of word relationships so that automatic associations are more easily activated and accessed from memory. Semantic networks are enriched by perceiving, abstracting and categorizing linguistic relationships. Think Twice requires students to find two words that go together from a set of four and explain why they go together. They then review the same four words and find two more that go together and explain why. These activities provide practice in identifying salient features that characterize words and require verbal reasoning to explain how the presented sets of words are connected. The activities target a deeper comprehension of word meaning for greater flexibility in word use.
