Description

This 14-card deck engages students in chromosomes, DNA and karyotypes. Cards are split between basic concept review and interactive activities that require student to observe and infer using images of actual chromosomes. Cards 1-5 have rich photographic backgrounds and help students review chromosome terminology through multiple choice questions. Cards 6-8 have a variety of different color backgrounds and ask students to determine which chromosomes determine male and female. Slide 8 features a Punnett square crossing a male and female that requires students to fill in genotypes and calculate the ratio of offspring. Card 9 asks students to drag and drop images of actual x and y chromosomes for identification. Cards 10 through 12 feature genetic karyotypes (pictures of your chromosomes). Card 10 provides a nonfiction reaching passage on karyotypes for student background. Student will work by dragging and dropping chromosomes in cards 11 and 12. These tasks require learners to number all 23 chromosomes and sorts them from smallest to largest. This difficult task is made much easier with BOOM cards frequently checking student answers. The final 3 slides deal with genetic disorders. Students will look at pictures of karyotypes and identify problems like Down and Turner Syndrome.
