Description: This deck focuses on the short U word family. Rimes included are ub, ud, ug, un, us, ut, and up. No b’s and d’s are placed on the same card to prevent errors due to letter reversals. This fun and engaging deck of 20 cards will reinforce letter-sound association and blending in students as they work independently to match the onset with the correct rime to build the word. Each card includes a picture and a letter representing the onset, or beginning sound of the word. Students are required to drag the onset to one of three rimes to correctly spell the word represented by the picture. Audio is provided for the directions and picture on each card but students will need to blend the onset with the rime independently. Immediate feedback is provided, and students will be automatically directed to the next card once the correct answer has been chosen. Once students have a firm understanding of phonemic awareness and are improving their letter-sound association skills, they can begin recognizing parts of words and blending them together. A deep understanding of letters, sounds, and how they can be grouped (chunked) and manipulated is a critical skill in emergent readers.
