This short video (5 minutes) demonstrates a few fine motor warm-ups that can help prepare hands for typing tasks. The activities focus on strengthening and activating the fingers used for keyboarding, including rolling small balls of clay or dough between the thumb and index finger and thumb and middle finger, pressing the dough into a finger exercise mat, and then isolating each finger to lift off the dough “blobs” one at a time. The routine finishes with a fun “spider push-ups in the mirror” activity, where students press the fingertips of one hand against the fingertips of the other hand and gently push them together, helping activate the finger muscles and promote finger awareness before typing. The finger exercise mat used in this tutorial is available under the printable resources.
