Feelings Have Shades: Social Inferencing for Middle & High School This deck was made for SLPs working with middle and high school students on emotional perspective taking and social inferencing. It starts with 7 instructional slides that walk through the idea that emotions come in shades. Rather than defaulting to "happy" or "sad," students are introduced to more specific words like frustrated, devastated, discouraged, and terrified. Each emotion category has a visual intensity scale and a picture clue strategy guide to help students get ready for the scenario cards. The 10 scenario cards each show a real photo of teens, adults and children in everyday situations. You present the card and talk through three questions together: how the person is most likely feeling, why they might feel that way, and what clues in the picture support that idea. Because the format is fully verbal, it works well for students who need supported discussion rather than reading or writing tasks. It tends to be a good fit for students with autism, pragmatic language delays, or social communication disorders. Scenarios cover situations like peer conflict, family stress, social outings, and school life. Photos feature diverse teens so students can see themselves in the situations. Skills Targeted: Emotional inferencing · Perspective taking · Evidence-based reasoning · Social awareness · Emotional vocabulary Ideal for: Middle school · High school ·
